Ease
the Pain and Discomfort of Swollen Feet in Pregnancy
– With SmoothToe Technology
Swollen feet, legs and hands are common during pregnancy.
It is estimated that about 30-40 % of pregnant women
will develop some oedema of their feet and legs, hand
or face.
Mostly harmless, pregnancy related swelling of your
feet and hands is a result of increased blood volume
as a result of pregnancy. This is an essential adaptation
brought about by pregnancy hormones.
Increased
blood volume ensures delivery of nutrients and oxygen
the developing baby in the womb and removal of the waste,
such as carbon dioxide from the baby.
Should
I be concerned about swollen feet and legs?
In a significant majority, the swelling of the feet
and legs causes discomfort the woman to warrant a mention
to the midwife or doctor. Women may be forced to buy
new shoes, because of increased feet size!
Hand
swelling may cause pain in your hands, a condition called
carpel tunnel syndrome. This may also present as tingling
in the tips of your fingers.
Swollen legs in pregnancy, also known as leg oedema
of pregnancy, pregnancy feet or dependent oedema, is
probably a result of impaired blood flow from your legs
back to the heart as a result of your bump!
The bigger the bump the more likely that you will have
oedema. There are other factors in the causation of
pregnancy swelling, including varicose veins both in
the legs and pelvis.
Usually,
the condition starts with swollen ankles, feet, legs
and even extend to the thighs.
There
are some disease states
Whilst pregnant, swollen feet and hands can signal presence
of a serious condition known as pre-eclampsia which
is a combination of high blood pressure and passing
of protein in the urine. Your midwife will diagnose
this condition very easily by checking your blood pressure
and testing the urine.
Even
more serious is a swollen foot or ankle on one side
only. If this is associated with pain, please report
to the hospital immediately as it may indicate presence
of a clot in your leg.
The last two conditions need urgent hospital attention.
How
can I ease the discomfort of swollen feet in pregnancy?
Advice includes common remedies for swollen feet such
as resting your feet on a stool, but for an active woman,
this is sometimes impractical. At the same time, the
practical solution of support tights can be challenging
because of the sweating and heat associated with the
tights.
Solutions that work include socks that are specifically
designed to apply some gradual compression thus aiding
blood flow from the toes and feet to the leg and back
up to the heart.
Not
all socks are made with this in mind.
Another important feature of quality socks is the material
they are made of.
Unfortunately, it is still very common to find cotton
socks being promoted as good foot care compression stockings
or socks even for diabetics! This is plainly wrong and
outdated. Cotton
holds moisture and thus aids bacterial growth. Not good
for vulnerable swollen feet.
Modern socks incorporating some scientific principles
do not contain cotton for a very good reason. Sweating
and heat put vulnerable feet at risk, especially those
of diabetic people.
Moreover, socks for swollen feet should be so designed
so that they apply graduated compression with smooth
toe technology, thereby avoiding any risk of causing
abrasions or blisters.
This
is why I whole heartedly recommend SmoothToe ® socks
for diabetics and pregnant mums.
My
daughter came home from the hospital last week after
giving birth to a beautiful baby boy. Her fluid
levels were low when she entered the hospital so
the hospital made sure that during her stay she
had plenty of fluid in her system. When she returned
home her feet, ankles, and legs were beyond skin
tight with the fluid that had built up. I gave her
a pair of my "Smooth Toe Knee High Socks"
to wear during the day and that night. The following
morning she had lost 10 lbs of fluid, and the second
day she was able to see her ankles again, which
she had not seen for weeks. Thanks Greg, your Smooth
Toe socks helped my daughter get back on her feet
so she could care for her newborn baby.

SmoothToe® socks have no cotton in them and have
the highest percentage of CoolMax® fibre you can
find. This is the technology that acts as a wick thereby
removing heat and moisture from your swollen foot and
leg; and that way keeping you nice and cool even in
a hot environment.
When we realised the quality of SmoothToe® socks,
we could not wait to offer them to our pregnant women,
who until now have had no specialist care for swollen
feet.
